Il centro agricolo di Pacognano conserva le sue caratteristiche originarie, con la maggior parte della popolazione (1520 residenti) dediti al lavoro dei campi. Il casale è posto su un dolce pendio circondato in alto da selve di castagno e sul falso piano da olivi e viti, tra Fornacelle e il vallone del rivo d’Arco. Il suo clima mite è molto confortevole, forse anche per questo prima i padri Salesiani, negli anni settanta, vi hanno costruito un moderno centro di soggiorno con una casa albergo. In seguito negli anni novanta anche la storica casa di campagna, abitata nel 1512 da “Giovan Battista della Porta”, letterato e umanista nonché autore dell’opera “De Humana Physiognonomia”, completamente restaurata è divenuta un incantevole e accogliente albergo con un’ampia parco e verde attrezzato. Da visitare anche l’antico palazzo della famiglia de Gennaro da pochi anni recuperato, con un pozzo di piperno di ottima fattura. La seicentesca chiesa parrocchiale con tre altari è dedicata alla natività di Maria SS. e in essa il 3 agosto 1814 fu istituita la congregazione dell’Addolorata. Nel sagrato della chiesa si trova il sepolcro della famiglia de Gennaro con una lapide marmorea.
The hamlet of Fornacelle currently has a population of more than 1300 inhabitants, most of whom are engaged in agriculture, handicrafts, catering and numerous young people working in the maritime sector. The production of oil, wine and cheese is excellent. The old village has recently had a considerable increase in new houses. In the centre of the village, on the R. Bosco road, there is the 16th century church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, and the nearby building of the confraternity of the Holy Rosary, founded in 1638, is of great value. It is worth mentioning the noble local families Gattola and Trecastelli, whose marble tombstones can be seen in the parish church. The Fornacelle hamlet has been indicated by some scholars as the place inhabited by the ‘Lestrigoni’, a rustic and wild population who, in Homer’s time, lived off game in the mountains of Campania. At Fornacelle, the remains of ancient factories and a cinerary urn were found in later times. Immediately after its discovery, it was transported to the small church of S. Giovanni in ‘Via Vecchia Fornacelle’. It was made of marble, two and a half palms high and one metre wide. On the lower part of the facade, two figures were depicted in relief as they bid each other farewell in the solemn act of death at the entrance to a temple, perhaps representing eternity. Unfortunately, the Chapel of St. John, which preserves a thousand years of history, is currently in a state of complete abandonment. A small jewel of history and religious faith that must be saved, before only ruins and oblivion remain.
