Il Monte Faito (1150 m), della catena dei monti Lattari, deve il suo nome alle ampie distese di faggi che ricoprono il suo territorio, creando insieme a castagni e abeti, e una ricca varietà di piante plurisecolari, un incantevole paesaggio di boschi a pochi chilometri dal mare. Frequentato già in epoca romana, era chiamato Monte Aureo o “Monte del Latte” per l’abbondante prodotto dei suoi pascoli che si riteneva avesse proprietà curative. Fino agli ultimi anni del 1800 ospitava una florida “industria della neve” raccolta in profonde fosse (tuttora visibili nei pressi del santuario di San Michele). Andare alla scoperta di Monte Faito è un’affascinante esperienza che regala indimenticabili emozioni in tutti i periodi dell’anno. A poca distanza del centro urbano di Castellammare di Stabia e di Vico Equense, è facilmente raggiungibile in auto, bus o in funivia. Mount Faito (1150 m) of the Lattari mountain chain owes its name to the vast expanses of beech trees that cover its territory, creating together with chestnut and fir trees and a rich variety of centuries-old plants, an enchanting landscape of woods a few kilometres from the sea. Already frequented in Roman times, it was called Monte Aureo or “Monte del Latte” (Milk Mountain) for the abundant produce of its pastures, which was believed to have curative properties. Until the end of the 19th century, it was home to a flourishing snow “industry”, collected in deep pits (still visible near the Sanctuary of San Michele). Exploring Monte Faito is a fascinating experience that offers unforgettable emotions in every season of the year.
