Il casale di Arola è situato su un pianoro, sovrastato a Nord – Est dal Monte Comune, mentre a Sud il rivo Lavinola e la Croce del Monaco ne segnano il confine dal Comune di Piano di Sorrento. Arola è fin dai tempi antichi conosciuta per l’aria salubre e per i prodotti del suo territorio agricolo, ricco di pozzi di acqua sorgiva. I 1650 abitanti sono per la maggior parte impegnati specialmente nel settore marittimo, in agricoltura, nella ristorazione, e nella lavorazione e trasformazione del latte. Nel casale oggi sono in attività diverse aziende lattiero- casearie che producono lattici e il richiestissimo prodotto d’eccellenza: il provolone del Monaco che qui ebbe origine. Ad Arola, secondo la leggenda, S. Antonino in cammino per i monti, per sfuggire alla persecuzione dei vandali, si fermò per dissetarsi, proprio all’epoca nella zona, infieriva una grave siccità, ebbe da una vecchietta del luogo la spontanea offerta di acqua che, invano aveva chiesto altrove, colpito dalla sua bontà, il Santo per riconoscenza profetizzò “Dovunque scaverete acqua troverete”. Una profezia che ancora oggi è tangibile per la persistente presenza di sorgenti d’acqua. Genuina credenza o leggenda essa è tramandata da secoli nella famiglia arolesi. La bella chiesa parrocchiale fu costruita su un pianoro sul quale si innalzavano due grandi querce, di esse è memoria un piccolo monumento voluto dai cittadini per ricordare gli avvenimenti. La chiesa è dedicata a S. Antonino, con sette altari di ottima fattura, le sue rendite sono amministrate da una società laicale. Il Vescovo di Vico Equense Paolino Pace la consacrò 6 dicembre del 1786.
Da visitare l’ex Convento Camaldolese del XVII secolo sito sulla collina di Astapiana ad Arola che costituisce un interessante esempio di architettura religiosa. Dal piazzale si ammira il panorama di Sorrento e della penisola. Per accedervi si passa sotto una torre “restaurata” del 1600.
The hamlet of Arola is situated on a plateau, overlooked to the north-east by Monte Comune, while to the south the Rio Lavinola and the Croce del Monaco mark its boundary with the municipality of Piano di Sorrento. Arola has been known since ancient times for its healthy air and for the products of its agricultural territory, rich in wells of spring water. The 1650 inhabitants are for the most part engaged especially in the maritime sector, in agriculture, in catering, and in the processing and transformation of milk. Today, several dairy farms are active in the hamlet, producing milk and the much sought-after product of excellence: the provolone del Monaco cheese, which originated here. According to legend, St. Antonino stopped at Arola on his way to the mountains to escape persecution by the Vandals and quenched his thirst. At the time, a severe drought was raging in the area and an old woman spontaneously offered him water, which he had asked for elsewhere in vain. Struck by his kindness, the saint prophesied out of gratitude: ‘Wherever you dig, you will find water’. A prophecy that is still tangible today due to the persistent presence of water springs. Genuine belief or legend, it has been handed down for centuries in the families of Arola. The beautiful parish church was built on a plateau on which two large oak trees stood, of which a small monument erected by the townspeople is a reminder. The church is dedicated to S. Antonino, with seven altars of excellent workmanship, and its revenues are administered by a lay society. The Bishop of Vico Equense Paolino Pace consecrated it on 6 December 1786.
The former 17th century Camaldolese Convent on the Astapiana hill in Arola is an interesting example of religious architecture. From the square you can admire the panorama of Sorrento and the peninsula. To get there you have to pass under a “restored” tower dating back to 1600.
