Since 1999, Vico Equense has hosted the scientific prize “Capo d’Orlando”. Named after a fossiliferous site, the prize takes place in May and is currently divided into six categories dedicated to Science, Divulgation, Multimedia Communication, Culture Management, Science and Industry, Science and Nourishment.
The prize is promoted by the Museo Mineralogico Campano, one of the most important science museums in the region of Campania for the amount and variety of specimens on show, and stands for scientific propagation and education, awarding the scholars and scientists in the different cultural and scientific categories.
Over the years, the prize has been awarded and accepted by 15 Nobel prize winners including John F. Nash, Riccardo Giacconi, James D. Watson, Paul Krugman, Andre Geim, Venki Ramakrishnan and Paul Nurse. In 2015 prize-winner Andre Geim donated samples of “graphene”, the revolutionary two-dimensional material obtained from graphite, to the Museum.
