FORNACELLE – PACOGNANO

Halfway down the road coming down from Arola is the ancient watchtower connected to the others so as to warn the other hilltop populations of the Saracen danger. Further downstream is Fornacelle. The church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, with its curved façade and watch in coloured ceramic, is like all these casali sided by the Oratorio del Rosario. Despite the small amount of space, a double calibrated ramp leads to the room of the coven. In here, over the wooden stalls of the brothers, is a small but precious picture gallery. Pacognano has stood the test of time, still featuring the rural houses hidden by the green. In the valley below is the 19th century church of Natività di Maria Santissima, with three naves and a large cupola. The nature here reveals, to those able to find it, a rare gem: the decayed yet still beautiful residence of Gian Battista della Porta. Inside the church, belonging from a previous place of worship, is a Renaissance fine marble plaque with angels on the side of the niche with the oil for the ill, in memory of the father of della Porta.
